Pilgrimage Church Glis
During excavations, traces of a rural baptistery from the early days of Christianity in the Valais were found. The most important component of this church complex, which was built around 615, is a rectangular baptismal font. Various stylistic epochs have left their mark on this unique church. The Romanesque tower, the Golden Gate, the Gothic side chapels and choir, the three-nave nave and the Renaissance portal form a unique overall impression. The Baroque side altars from 1650 are not to be overlooked: the Rosary altar to the south and the Scapular altar to the north. Both altars are works by Giorgio Bernardi from Domodossola. The paintings were created by Georg Christoph Mannhaft, the son-in-law of the Great Stockalper.
