The trail leads directly past the mountain restaurant Wasenalp. Here the trail leads leisurely to the Fronbach bridge, where the beautiful houses with stone roofs can be admired in the Wintrigmatte. The route continues quite flat in the open forest until, after approx. 300m, it leads up to the oldest larch forest in Central Europe. The larch, which is up to 600 years old, is clearly seen fighting against wind, weather and sun. The thought of what these trees have already experienced inspires great respect.
After almost 300 metres of altitude difference between these old colossuses you reach a small hill, the Hohliecht, north of the avalanche barrier. The panorama of the Bortelhorn, Aletschhorn, Bietschhorn and the other peaks of the Bernese Alps is magnificent.
The way back follows the same path at the beginning. From Wasenalp, the hike leads left along to Rothwald. Postbuses run regularly along the Simplon Pass road.
