The hike starts at the Hotel Belalp. First enjoy the view of the Great Aletsch Glacier here and then set off on the ascent. The path leads past Villa Tyndall (built in 1877) and up to the Tyndall Monument (2351 m above sea level), which is dedicated to the Irish scientist John Tyndall.
The deep affection for her husband, the feelings of guilt over his tragic end and the attachment to the Belalp and its inhabitants, may have been the motives for the stone monument. John Tyndall (1820-1893) was an Irish physicist and alpinist. From 1861 until his death, he spent summers in the Swiss Alps, mainly at his favourite place, Belalp.
Continue your ascent until you reach the Hohbiel reservoir. Take a break and enjoy the Valais mountain panorama!
If you still like, you can continue the hike and hike up to the Sparrhorn or start the descent down.
